INVESTMENT IN RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT AND THE FUTURE

Innovations belong to the heart and soul of Constantia Flexibles, which is why the area of research & development has been massively expanded: a few weeks ago, on October 21, a new, ultra-modern competence center for polymer films and film laminates was opened.

The CC Films is part of Constantia Hueck Folien and located at the Group’s second-largest production site in Weiden in Germany’s Upper Palatinate region. Up to 15 experts are employed here and work on around 100 projects each year. The range of tasks is extensive. They include supporting the Product and Sales Manager with analyzing and checking the composition of the latest film products as well as developing new film formulations, which are implemented together with the raw material suppliers in order to achieve optimal quality and meet the strict requirements for materials that come into contact with food and medicines in the most appropriate way possible. The development of prototypes out of in-house innovations is also on the “to-do list” so that the requirements of long-term developments such as environmentally friendly packaging with a higher recycling content can be met.

“Today’s opening sends out a clear signal that we intend to support our customers around the world with innoPharma vative film products,” said Gerold Riegler, who has a seat on the management board of Constantia Flexibles. “Also for 2016, we are planning our own film production facility on a laboratory scale, for which we are installing an extrusion machine for PE, PP and other barrier materials.”

This will also place Constantia in the position of being able to develop sterilizable sealing films and films with anti-scalping properties. Tests on our contact lens laminates will also be performed in the new laboratory. The economic background for the investment is also based on the fact that half of the Group’s sales are generated with packaging made from plastic films. Global demand in this area is being driven by the Asian and African markets. Constantia Flexibles expects that the proportion of sales accounted for by film-based products will continue to increase in the future.

Constantia Hueck Folien in Weiden is the Group’s second-largest factory, with 700 employees. The Pharma Division of Constantia Flexibles also supplies the pharmaceutical industry from here. The location has a suitable machine capability for varnishing, laminating, printing and cutting on site. In the last five years, Constantia Hueck Folien has invested about EUR 20 million in new machines and is one of the most important employers in the region.
